Time Capsule Burial

The c4u youth club buried a time capsule as part of the Family Tree Heritage Project. The capsule contained evidence of the research that the young people have done over the last few months into their family trees, and what life was like in the 1950s and 1900s.
The young people hope that the capsule will be dug up in 50 years time and will help young people in the future to find out about the project and to look at what life is like today. The young people put items important to them in the capsule, including the number 1 single, magazines, food packaging, clothes label and coins. There is also information about the young people and what they enjoy doing in the capsule.
The burial was filmed for the documentary that is being made about the project.

Family Tree Heritage Project

On Tuesday 28 November the c4u youth club launched ‘Journey Through Time’, a documentary style film marking the end of their family tree heritage project at an exciting premier and award ceremony.

The event took place at 7pm at Mansfield Museum. The young people arrived in limosines, wearing 50s costume, to walk down the red carpet to a reception of over 70 people. The crowd was made up of friends, family and representatives of community organisations. Their was a delicious buffet, followed by the film premiere and awards were presented to the young people by The Kirkby Trust’s vice-chair and the head of operations from Mansfield District Council.

The documentary charts the progress of the youth club as they have delved into the past to research their family tree’s and discover what life was like in the 1900s and the 1950s. It includes revealing interviews with local people and exploration of the thoughts and feelings of the young people as they talk to the camera in a series of video diaries.

The film comes at the end of the Family Tree Heritage Project that has taken part from May-October 2006. Some of the young people at c4u wanted to research their family tree and we have worked in partnership with Mansfield Museum to trace our family roots, and looking at what life was like for our ancestors, particularly in the 1950s and 1900s.

We have buried a time capsule containing information we have found, and information about how we live today.

The family tree project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund

We are grateful to Mansfield Museum and Kirkby and District Conservation Society, who have helped with our research.
